Skim Coat Direct: No Plastering, No 7–28 Day Curing Wait

On a traditional hollow block wall, the plaster is not the last step — the waiting is. Cement plaster typically needs 7 to 28 days to cure before it can take paint. CrossBlocks walls skip the plaster render entirely: the skim coat goes straight onto the block, and the wall is paint-ready without that hold.

Ask any contractor in Cebu where their schedule really goes and plastering (palitada) will come up fast. It is not just the days spent mixing, throwing, and screeding mortar onto both faces of every wall. It is the dead time afterwards — the stretch where the wall is finished but nobody can touch it, because the plaster is still curing.

The Step Nobody Puts in the Estimate

Cement plaster gains its strength through hydration, and that takes time and moisture. General practice on Philippine sites is at least 7 days of curing, and painters will commonly ask for the full 28 days before applying paint — partly for strength, partly because fresh plaster is highly alkaline and will burn through a paint film that goes on too early.

That window rarely shows up on a bill of materials. It shows up somewhere more expensive:

  • Delayed turnover. The wall is built, but handover waits on a chemical reaction.
  • Trades stacked up behind it. Painters, tilesetters, and finishing crews all queue for the same cured surface.
  • Extended site costs. Rentals, scaffolding, security, and supervision keep running while the wall does nothing.
  • Rework risk. Paint applied over plaster that has not fully cured can blister, peel, or discolor — and then it gets done twice.

Treat 7–28 days as the customary range rather than a fixed number: the real figure depends on your mix, the weather, and what your painter will sign off on. However you land inside that range, it is time you are paying for.

What CrossBlocks Does Instead

CrossBlocks are machine-molded to a consistent size with flat, closed faces, and they interlock as they stack. There is no thick mortar bed squeezing out between courses and no uneven block face to bury. That means the wall does not need a plaster render to become flat — it already is.

So the sequence changes. Instead of block → plaster → cure → skim → paint, a CrossBlocks wall goes block → skim coat → paint. The skim coat is applied directly to the block, thin, and it is a finishing layer — not a thick body coat that the rest of the job has to wait on.

To be exact about the claim: a skim coat still goes on. What is removed is the plaster render underneath it — and with it, the curing period that render imposes on everything downstream.

Proof on Site: Pink Gorilla Hotel, Moalboal

The photo at the top of this article is a working site, not a render. Bare CrossBlocks stand on the lower level exactly as they were laid, while walls on the floor above are already skim-coated and paint-ready. Nothing in between those two states involved a plaster render.

The crew put the time saving more plainly than we can:

“kung dili pa ni CROSSBLOCKS gamit, dili ni mahuman og 2 ka adlaw kada wall kay plastering pa man. 2.7 meters by 6 meters kada wall”

Translation: If this weren't CROSSBLOCKS we were using, it wouldn't be finished in 2 days per wall because there would still be plastering. Each wall is 2.7 meters by 6 meters.

Two days for a 2.7 m × 6 m wall — roughly 16 square meters — and that is with the finish going on. Add a plaster render to the same wall and you add the plastering days plus the curing window before anyone can paint it.

What This Is Worth on Your Project

1. A shorter critical path. Removing a mandatory wait removes it from every wall on the job, not just one. On a multi-room build the compounding is significant.

2. Lower finishing cost. No render means no sand and cement for it, and no plasterer days to pay for — only the thin skim.

3. Fewer trades and fewer handoffs. Every handoff between crews is a scheduling risk. Cutting one out cuts the coordination with it.

4. Less rework exposure. No premature-paint-over-green-plaster failures, because there is no green plaster.

5. Earlier revenue. For a commercial build like a hotel, finishing weeks sooner is not just a cost saving — it is rooms open sooner.
